Here are some of our pro-tips on how to implement a remote work strategy:

1. Establish a Routine
Humans are creatures of habit in the sense that we like to be able to anticipate what’s coming. Routines act as an agenda for the day, helping us know exactly what to anticipate therefore curbing decision fatigue. Perform the activities you normally would as if you were going to the office – take a shower, get dressed, get your morning coffee. Anything that gives you a sense of familiarity. Carrying out these tasks will help put you in the professional mindset.

2. Communicate Clear Expectations
Remote work is no easy feat as it requires a ton of teamwork and communication. Don’t sweat it. It’s good practice to have a discussion with your manager and teammates to clearly outline expectations in terms of priorities and timeline. This will help give you a better sense of which projects to pour your energy into without having to worry about looming deadlines. Make sure to openly communicate any pitfalls you may be experiencing or what challenges you may be facing given the circumstances.

3. Know Your Limits
Knowing yourself and how you work in a given environment is key to adjusting behavior. If you’re someone who needs familiarity, try setting up a home office in a separate part of the house. Set a timer for specific tasks in order to keep you motivated and focused, this will decrease daydreaming and non-productive behaviors. It’s beneficial to have your remote work hours align with your typical business hours so as not to invade your personal life. If you get overwhelmed, take a quick walk or breather for 10 or 15 minutes.

4. Check Your Technology
Having the right technology and resources are huge components to be able to effectively work from home. Make sure you have the right equipment needed, that means your office laptop, charger, or any other hardware items that are considered essential. Its good practice to test your software applications as many remote teams tend to utilize software such as Zoom, Slack and Go To Meeting, to name a few. Troubleshooting beforehand will make your day go a lot quicker and eliminate having to worry about technical difficulties that might greatly interfere with tasks.

 5. Minimize Distractions
Having a space that allows you to concentrate is key to be able to work productively. If you don’t have a home office, consider using a spare room with minimal distractions. Make sure not to have the TV going in the background as it’s easy to get caught up in the latest media. If possible, consider investing in soundproof headphones or earbuds in order to increase concentration and plug out background noise.
